Values

Work in our lab is motivated by core values of:

  • Curiosity.  Our lab is motivated by the desire to understand how the molecular machines that drive biological processes function, and by the desire to develop revealing new approaches to study these machines.
  • Creativity.  We enjoy coming up with new kinds of explanations for biophysical and biochemical phenomena.
  • Opportunity.  We aim to promulgate a lab culture that provides a safe and supportive environment for all lab members to enhance their capabilities to do independent scientific research.
  • Clarity.  We place a premium on effectively communicating the results of our work to both scientists and laypeople.
  • Integrity.  Honesty is essential to the conduct of scientific research and we strive not to mislead others by either commission or omission.
  • Humility.  We acknowledge that no one has a monopoly on being correct, and all lab members commit to giving a fair and respectful hearing to the opinions of others.
  • Service. The scientific work of everyone in the lab, including their salaries, is paid for by government and charitable organizations; we have the responsibility to give these donors good value for the funds they invest in our work.
  • Advancement. The lab is only a step on the career pathway of trainees; we aim to help students and postdocs to move forward on their pathway without unnecessary delay.
